Homes of Tulsa

I work at the Gilcrease museum and, like many others, I was furloughed for a time during the covid-19 pandemic. It was at a time when everyone was locked inside and there was a real fear about connecting with other people. It would have been easy to stay indoors, but I felt I needed to make myself get out there and see what was going on.

My friend and I began walking around the neighborhoods like Maple Ridge and it really struck me how many different architectural styles you might find in an area. Β I began carrying my sketchbook and capturing the homes that caught my attention. I quickly realized the monochromatic approach was not satisfying. I love color, so I began traveling with my portable palette and brush.

So many times we drive by the houses in our own neighborhoods without really seeing them. These paintings are my way of slowing down and taking a closer look at where we live. I hope people feel that when they experience these works.
